Film Scanning with the Nikon D7100 DSLR

Here are some test shots of Kodak Gold 200 using a Nikon D7100 with 3D printed negative holder using an iPhone as a backlight.

First I imported the Raw file in to Darktable and used the Negadoctor module following this tutorial. Lab scan is on the left, DSLR scan is on the right.

Next I tweaked the white balance, contrast, and exposure to better match the look of the lab scan. Lab scan is on the left, DSLR scan is on the right.

While I still think the lab scan looks better, the DSLR scan is pretty decent. I spent $0.00 to get these results using equipment I already had (Nikon D7100, 55mm Micro Lens, Tripod, iPhone, 3D printer to make negative holder, and free open source Darktable software). I think this is a good proof-of-concept for self scanning and I will plan to take steps to improve the scan quality in the future with my ultimate goal of being able to scan 35mm, 120, 4x5, and Minox negatives at home.
